ABRACA NEWSLETTER 07/11/2025 - ENGLISH VERSION

Nederlandse Versie / Version Français

Dear ABRACA members,

Welcome to the November 2025 edition of our newsletter! This time our newsletter will cover the following Subjects:

ABRACA PORTFOLIO REVIEWS!

ABRACA has been working very hard behind the scenes to organise portfolio reviews, and we’re ready to roll out the first one! On 11 December, the first edition of the ABRACA portfolio reviews will take place! Our first edition will focus on 2D Animation showreels. Pascal Vermeersch was gracious enough to lend us our help in reviewing them! If you’re not a 2D Animator, rest assured! Our plan is to hold many more portfolio reviews in the future, all dedicated to a specific part of the animation pipeline. If your field is not represented in the current event, there is a high chance that it will be in the future. However, please let us know on our Discord if there are any specific fields that you want to see soon. We will do our best to make them happen!

Now, a little more about the portfolio reviews themselves:

To participate, you need to be a member of ABRACA. More information will be found in the participation form, which we will send out later this week. You will have until the 26th of November to enter your submissions.

The event itself will take place online, with more information about how to join coming on a later date. Attending the event without getting your portfolio reviewed will also be possible! This does, however, also require you to be an ABRACA member. If you are interested in joining the event, but are not yet a member, now is the time to sign up!

We also plan to record the event, and make the recordings available to our members afterwards in case you would like to review what was said.

With all that said, be prepared to gather your work and keep your eyes on your inbox during the coming week!

Other upcoming ABRACA events!

Portfolio reviews aren’t the only events that ABRACA has been working towards behind the scenes. We want to use this opportunity to show you the tip of the iceberg already. That way you have an idea of what’s coming!

First off, towards the beginning of next year, ABRACA is planning to hold an info-session in collaboration with Mediarte. The focus will be on working as an artist in the animation sector. We will discuss things like contracts, vacation days and the artists’s statute. The session will be in person, and not online. This one will be mainly focused on the Flemish side of the country, and a different event covering the same information for artists living in the Federation Wallonie-Bruxelles will be held at a later date. We’ve separated these sessions to make them easier to understand.

But that’s not all! In the near future, ABRACA will hold a roundtable for those aiming to submit their projects to the VAF. We’ll cover best practices and ways you can give yourself the best chances possible for getting your project selected for funding. Location and date for this are still being worked on, but we’ll be excited to share more with you soon.

The upcoming Ensors will also have a little ABRACA tint. We’ve been graciously allowed to join them, with the aim of helping them shine a bigger spotlight on the animation industry! We will share more details about this at a later date.

There is still more! However, we will have to announce them at a later date. We hope that it’s clear that there’s a lot on the horizon for you! Like we’ve said before, please keep your eyes peeled in your inboxes!

Reminder: Cartoon Business

We already covered it in our last newsletter and want to remind you once again that the Cartoon Business event will soon take place in Brussels. If you are interested in getting a unique view on the business side of the animation industry, along with some opportunities to network on the first day of the festival, check out their program and website.

Rebecca Sugar SVA livestream

Fans of Steven Universe rejoice! The showrunner, Rebecca Sugar, will be holding an alumni panel about her newest work. The panel is in New York, at the SVA college, however the entire event will be livestreamed online and is free and open to the public! There you will be able to follow an interesting moderated talk between her and three more SVA alumni: Chris Burns, Alex Myung and Ian Jones-Quartey. The line-up will surely mean a very interesting discussion! You can find the event page here.

ABRACA GenAi survey

ABRACA had joined an AI-workgroup together with De Unie van Regisseurs, de Scenaristengilde, Belva (Belgian Voiceactors) and De Acteursgilde. The idea is to share information between our unions to compose legislation that covers everyone working in the Belgian audiovisual industry. The workgroup is flemish, at the moment, but the idea is to approach to our Walloon colleagues when we have a better understanding of the GenAi situation on the flemish side. To gather this information we’ve made a short survey, it would be amazing if as many of you would take 5 minutes to fill it in!

You can find a link to the survey here: https://forms.gle/zzEsEifC2J4A721c9

As always, thank you for your continued interest and support!

If you would like to either receive this newsletter in your mailbox in either Dutch or French as well, we would like to remind you that that is possible! Our website contains options to subscribe to a Dutch and French language version. We’ve recently implemented this option, but haven’t seen many people subscribing, so these versions of the Newsletter are primarily available on our website. If you are excited to become an ABRACA member, you can join us through this link. Membership is paid, but we work through voluntary contributions. This means you are not held to a standard subscription tariff, but are instead encouraged to give what you are willing and able to. On average, we recommend 5 euro as a student, and 20 euro as a professional. Like mentioned earlier, you will be able to benefit from access to ABRACA exclusive events that we’re actively organising. If becoming a member seems too big of a step for you right now, you’re always welcome to join the discussion on our Discord.  Either way, you’ve already been a big help by being interested in our wonderful community!
